In the exhibition Model Collapse: Love you, bye Maria Mavropoulou examines the similarities between artificial intelligence and the human brain in terms of their process of decline. The gradual loss of memory as it appears in cases of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease is compared with the phenomenon of model collapse in artificial intelligence, when the models are fed back with data generated by themselves (synthetic data), leading to errors. Following her research with patients at early stages of dementia, the artist records objects associated with their personal memories while conversing with artificial intelligence applications to explore the ways in which our collective unconscious is imprinted on AI models. The show is further enriched through the use of snapshots coming from an anonymous family photo album, that stands for the creation and the preservation of human identity, as well as through the archaeological artefacts on display in the Eretria museum—an archetypal repository of collective memory. The artworks approach the aforementioned issues by way both visually and through research-based practices, calling upon visitors to reflect on the complexity of memory, its role in the construction of our identity—both individual and collective—as well as the imprint of technology in this process.

The project would not have been possible without the invaluable support and collaboration of the “Nestor” Psychogeriatric Association.

The production is part of the 2025 programme of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture “All of Greece, One Culture”.
